University Health Network (UHN) is currently in the midst of a major strategic initiative in collaboration with SickKids titled, Caring Safely.

Caring Safely represents UHN’s commitment to safety, with a plan to make safety a major organizational focus that will eliminate preventable harm to staff and patients.

Caring Safely will build awareness of the scope of the problem of preventable harm which will lead us to develop solutions that result in each employee knowing they can and must speak up for safety at all times.

This new reorganization is focused along four major streams of activity: Reduce hospital acquired conditions (HAC) Decreasing the number of serious safety events (SSE) Fostering a positive safety culture among staff, volunteers, and patients Reducing the number of incidents that result in harm to workers As member of the UHN Patient Safety and Quality Improvement team, the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Coach will be the ambassador for patient safety and quality improvement and will be the pivotal Lead for the following accountabilities: Advance patient safety and quality in the organization through consultation and education on quality methodologies and patient safety to the organization through knowledge of clinical best practices, legislative requirements and policies related to quality and patient safety Champion a patient safety and quality improvement approach across the organization based on High Reliability Science through development, implementation, and evaluation of reliability science methods and tools, and accelerate patient safety through representation on various corporate and program committees Manage patient safety events through investigation, engaging interprofessional teams, facilitating case reviews, and providing continuous organizational learning using the Canadian Incident Analysis Framework Assist in the selection and analysis of quality-related performance indicators to monitor organizational, program, and/or unit level performance to ensure alignment with strategic direction.

Some of these indicators will be incorporated into UHN’s Safety Scorecard and UHN’s annual Quality Improvement Plan Manage projects and initiatives designed to promote patient safety and quality improvement on a corporate-wide, program-wide and local, patient care unit scale Provide leadership, guidance, and planning for quality and patient safety initiatives through advocating for clinical standardization through quality improvement initiatives and document preparation Qualifications: Completion of a bachelor’s degree Being a member of a regulated healthcare professional is strongly preferred Minimum of 6-8 years practical and related experience in the healthcare field Previous experience in quality and performance improvement methods is required Experience leading Patient Safety & Quality Improvement initiatives within healthcare is required to allow the individual to immediately facilitate events based on their process improvement knowledge and experience Experience working with physician and other clinicians is required Project management experience preferred Project planning Implementation Demonstrated experience in facilitating a major change initiative in a healthcare environment Demonstrated change management skills (consulting, negotiating, influencing) Knowledge of hospital organizational structure and processes preferred Experience working with diverse stakeholders is required Demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment Analytical ability with excellent attention to detail Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills Experience in use of Microsoft Office applications required If you are interested in making your contribution at UHN, please apply on-line.
